About Limasawa Island in Southern Leyte Philippines
Welcome to Limasawa Island - Sothern Late, The Philippines
Limasawa Island is located at the southern tip of the Leyte province of The Philippines and is home to a large cross celebrating the first Catholic Easter Sunday mass held on March 31, 1521. The island is famously referred to as the "site of the First mass in the Philippines". There are around 450 steps to the top of the hill where the “original” cross is located.
At the foot of the hill where the cross stands is a National Shrine also celebrating the first mass and the visit of Portuguese explorer Magellan.
Limasawa is still very much undeveloped and Electricity is provided to the community from 6:00 pm to midnight.
Travel around most parts of the island by foot is hard going in the
humid climate but most roads are hard surfaced and suitable for
bicycles and motorbikes.
The beaches on Limasawa have very narrow sand areas but the water is clear and the population
is small so there is plenty of room for you to enjoy yourself at the many beaches around the island.
Limasawa is divided into 6 Barangays.
- San Agustin (Tawid)
- San Bernardo (Tigib)
